I have heard recently that each person is hit with at least 3,000 marketing messages a day!! A day! I am now in two different marketing classes and learning about all different types of promotion types and how to reach your target market, but I’m also learning about the sneakiness and almost brainwashing ways in which business take over us. Brands and logos are all over! They cover peoples clothing, buildings, posters, cars, dogs, the list goes on. I even was told about a woman who sold her forehead on EBay and had a company’s logo tattooed on her forehead! What is this world coming to??
I recently saw a clip from an interview with Naomi Klein who wrote a book called “Logo.” I want to read this book! It’s all about the change in and importance of brands these days, which is something I have definitely wondered about. Why is it that when we see someone with a shirt with Hollister written on it we automatically think differently about them? Is it because of the brand? Is it because we know it’s a good quality? I really liked something that Naomi said about brands “It’s about you, not about the brand being of good quality, it about you being good quality because you buy that brand.” It’s the image that we represent when we buy a certain brand. WHY? This is a question that seriously boggles my mind!!! I wish that it wasn’t so important to some people to have certain brand named items. It is ruining the image of our world! Not just of America! The big companies that we buy these brands from are outsourcing their production to “Export Processing Zones (according to Naomi). Starving children in third-world countries are the ones making these clothes with a little name on them! And for some reason we HAVE to have it! I wish that everyone would realize how ridiculous it is to pay so much money for a logo!! It’s only a word that was fancied up by some big shot in a business fiddling around on their computer than placed on an item of clothing. We must remember that everything that we buy can have an affect on someone else, so we should be more careful at what we consume!!!

I've worked in business most of my life, and am currently interested in internet marketing. I know that "branding" is being taught and practiced in many areas--But isn't that the name of the game--more sales=more profits!
However, personally, I'm with you. I seldom buy anything because of the brand name--certainly not clothing. Some grocery and day-to-day items, cleaning products, etc., I prefer certain brands, but most anything else, I quite frankly don't care what brand it is. I look for value, first and foremost.
I think, even if I had a million dollars, I wouldn't buy things like "designer name" clothing--just on principal!
